"If you __________, then you don't deserve my respect."

I've read phrases like that all over xanga, and sometimes they can be hard to argue with. There are many things I can do to lose people's respect, and them mine. In spite of that, I will still do my best to respect them, and I'll tell you why.

    I'm broken too.

I mess up. I'm not perfect. I have, typos: in my posts. I msipell words. I say dum things. I can be insensitive, ignorant, or just plain oblivious. That's not to say that I like being that way, but changing and growing is a process. I'm not where I want to be, but I'm trying to get there or at least move in that direction. If you can say that you already are perfect, then good for you, let me know how you do it.

For all the rest of us, realize that though you are broken or messed up, you're not alone. We're in the same boat too, so don't be so hard on yourself. Let's not use this knowledge as a way to excuse our behavior, but let us use it to free us from the burden of messing up.

So let us extend some grace and respect others and ourselves, even if we don't think it is deserved—that is, after all, the meaning of grace.
